Tours begin at the top of the escalators on the Third Floor.

My Favorite Things tours bring some of the most opinionated and fascinating artists, cultural producers and community figures into the galleries to discuss their favorite works of art in Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion and SAM’s collection. Free with museum admission.

Akiko Fukai, Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute and curator of the exhibition, speaks on Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion and the enormous impact of Japanese fashion on the world scene. The new aesthetics foraged by visionaries such as Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, and others feature prominently in this discussion spanning the 1980s through the present.

Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, discusses the Japanese “fashion revolution” of the 1980s and the impact of contemporary Japanese fashion and street style through the lens of Future Beauty and her 2010 exhibition, Japan Fashion Now.

J-Fashion Your Life: Cut + Sew Edition! SOLD OUT
Saturday, July 27, 10 am–4 pm
SAM Downtown, Nordstrom Art Studio

Explore the aesthetics behind Japanese street fashion in this workshop for adults with designer Malia Peoples. Learn a few sewing tricks, have a few laughs, and get ready to transform re-purposed items from your own closet. Please bring 3–5 items of clothing to cut and sew.

Crafting at the Park

Drop in and get creative with hands-on art activities inspired by pop culture, fashion and the works of art in Future Beauty. Featuring all-ages activities led by local artists and designers! FREE and open to the public.
