Making and Worship of Ganesh Statues

Every year Hindus around the world celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival that marks the birthday of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The festival begins with the installation of Ganesh idols both in private homes and publicly on large pandals (moving stages). This photo shows a sculptor working on one of these idols, which begins months in advance of the festival. After 11 days of celebration, Ganesh Chaturthi comes to an end when the clay idols are immersed in water and Hindus bid farewell to Ganesh as he departs the earth once again.
