Happy Siblings

Happy Siblings, 2019, Amoako Boafo, oil on canvas, 63 x 63 in., Courtesy of Jesse Williams Collection

Verbal Description Transcript: Happy Siblings, painted in 2019. Oil on canvas. 5 feet 3 inches square. Two young Black people, a man and a woman, stand facing us in the center of the canvas. They are both smiling and meeting our eyes. The man stands in front, with the woman – who appears to be slightly taller – behind him. She has her arms around his shoulders and is looking at us over his right shoulder – that is, her face is to the left of his as we face the canvas. Both have short black hair. The man is shown from the thigh upwards. His head is slightly tilted toward the woman’s, so he’s almost resting it against her cheek. He wears a long-sleeved shirt that is off-white with a hint of light brown. It has a slight metallic sheen. Underneath he wears black trousers. Trousers and shirt are painted as broad, flat areas of color. His hands hang by his sides. The woman’s body is hidden behind the man – all we see of her are her head, shoulders and arms. She appears to be wearing a short-sleeved dress or top in the same off-white as her brother’s shirt. Her right hand rests on her brother’s right shoulder. Her left arm is draped around his neck, with the hand hanging loose in front of his chest. The siblings’ faces and arms are molded in fluid streaks of umber brown paint mingled with streaks of ultramarine blue. They stand against a plain pinkish-white background.
