The Menu

The Menu, 2020, Amoako Boafo, paper transfer and oil on canvas, 79 1/8 x 65 3/8 in., Courtesy of the Artist

Verbal Description Transcript The Menu, painted in 2020. Paper transfer and oil on canvas. About 6 feet 7 inches high by 5 feet 5 inches wide. A young Black woman in a vibrant, sunflower yellow turtleneck sits behind a rectangular wooden table. Her body faces us across the tabletop, so the lower part of her body is hidden by it. She doesn’t meet our eye: her head is turned slightly towards her right – that’s our left as we face the picture. She appears to be gazing into the distance. Her hair looks short, or it may have been pulled into the nape of her neck. The woman leans both elbows on the table, with her hands raised in front of her face. Beneath her chin, the fingers of her left hand rest in the palm of her right. By the woman’s left elbow is a straight-sided glass vase holding a spray of pale-yellow orchids. The artist’s signature has been scratched into the surface of the table to the right of the vase. In front of the woman on the table is a white sheet of paper. The flatly painted white rectangle forms a contrast with the brown wooden tabletop, which is painted with vigorous, visible brushstrokes. Apart from the figure of the woman, the composition of the painting can be described as being divided into three horizontal bands. The bottom third of the painting is almost entirely occupied by the width of the tabletop, with just a glimpse of deep cream-colored floor above and to the left. Above, the lower part of the wall – or background – is shown as a band of lighter, plain off-white. And above that, occupying the top third of the painting, the background is covered with a floral pattern. The pattern is composed of twisting stems of tulip-like flowers in shades of red, orange and green. It is the same pattern that forms the blouse in the painting Umber Brown Belt, which is hung nearby. These plain and patterned bands form a backdrop to the upper part of the woman’s body. Against this background, the woman’s yellow pullover appears as a flat area of color.
