Seated Ganesa Cambodia, c. 13th century
Gray stone
Eugene Fuller Memorial Collection, 34.67
While Cambodia is primarily Buddhist, Hindu deities were also introduced there. A number
of images of Ganesh, Visnu, and others were carved during this time but then gave way to
Buddhist images. Notice the relatively closed form of this sculpture; his trunk or limbs
do not reach out into space. Although this view is from the side, you can also get a sense
of its symmetry, unlike most sculpture of Ganesa from India. In particular, the trunk
hanging straight down is distinctive. In India, Ganesas trunk is shown curving to
the right or left. |
