Apartment 19, linocut print, 22 x 30 in.

Nicholas Brown

My Apartment series is based on photos I took while recently living in Shanghai. These six story, walkup buildings were mostly built approximately 30 - 40 years ago and compromise a large part of the middle class housing found between the inner old city and the newer, outer suburban apartment towers. I became drawn to them because of their near sameness across many areas, except over time most have been modified individually by the occupants.
